The 30 day challenge - Day 2

Hello day 2. How are you???   So day 2 is the meaning behind your blog name - Disco Lemonade Does Fashion

The story goes something like this....

Quite a number of years ago there was one of those "fill out this survey about your friend" things on myspace (I told you it was awhile ago).  I sent it out to a bunch of my friends just for fun.  One of the questions on it asked something along the lines of "If you could give me any nickname, what would it be?"  People sent back all kinds of random stuff, but one of my friends sent back that my nickname should be Disco Lemonade.  I, being blond, didn't get it or even where he came up with it, so I asked.  Disco lemonade is part of a line in the Marcy Playground song "Sex and Candy".

Hangin' round downtown by myself
And I had too much caffeine
And I was thinkin' 'bout myself
And then there she was
In platform double suede
Yeah there she was
Like DISCO LEMONADE

He said it just fit me, and apparently that must be true because it has stuck around for awhile.

The second part of my blog name is just logical.  I do fashion.  Well mostly I make fashion, design clothes, and create cool stuff.  i started the blog when I started making baby clothes full time, so then I was only doing fashion.  But now I'm expanding into housewares and a little bit of jewelry.  It's a lot of fun around my house right now =)

The 30 day challenge - Day 1...

Ok so we had a small health thing that set me back a few days - every one's ok now. So here's day 1 - a recent picture of yourself and 15 interesting facts about yourself.

This is me (with no makeup and my hair not done) and my Squeaky.  She stole my licorice, then after she licked it she tried to give it back. I told her she could keep it =)

15 "Interesting" facts about me (no promises that they are going to be all that interesting)

  1. I'm short, but I prefer to call myself fun-sized, it sounds better.
  2. I would rather be sewing or playing with my kids than anything else in the world.
  3. I wish the Man could get a job in ministry, so does he.
  4. Some day the Man and I want to own a camp or something like it.
  5. More than anything I wish I could be a stay-at-home mom and have chickens in my yard.
  6. I have had an Etsy shop for over a year, but just started to actually list things in it.
  7. I don't sleep. No, seriously, like 4 hours a night is my max.
  8. I'd rather stay up late, than get up early - yet I work a shift that starts a 6am and I have to get up at 3am to get there on time.
  9. I have a blended family, but most people don't know that or cannot tell.
  10. On one side of my extended family I am the oldest on the other side I am the second youngest (my brother's the youngest).
  11. At any given point in my life my hair has been blond, brown, red, purple, hot pink, or teal, but never black.
  12. I can count on one hand how many drinks I have had in the last 2 years.
  13. My two best friends live in the same state, on the other side of the country from me.
  14. I'm left hand retarded (that means you could cut off my left hand and i would probably never know because it's pretty much useless to me).
  15. Both of my kids have nicknames. I call them by their nicknames more than I use their real names. The older one prefers it this way.
Ok there you go. Enjoy!!!

What to buy, what to buy???

So for Christmas I was blessed with a gift certificate to The Needle Shop on Etsy.  I initially had thoughts of all these wonderful fabrics that I would love to buy and make things with.  And then I went to their website and disaster struck.  What do i buy? Which fabrics do I want the most? Which project do I want to do the most? Ahhhhhhh! What do I do??????

So I have held onto this gift cert for 2 months now hoping the fabric would just give me a call or something so I wouldn't have to make the decision. No such luck.

I know it doesn't expire for a few more months, so really I have time to hold onto it.  But there is something that is built inside of me that says - spend it.

I keep wavering between a few different fabrics:

This Alexander Henry Meadow Lark in Blue-Grey

I love the owls in this Robert Kaufman print.

And I don't know what it is about this Michael Miller print, but it's amazing.

I think I have a thing for birds....

A prayer for New Zealand

I have lived through a multitude of tragedies and life experiences.

I have never lived through an earthquake.

I have surfed and played on the beach in a hurricane.

I have never played during an earthquake.

I have hidden in my basement during countless tornadoes.

I have never hidden in a doorway or under a desk in an earthquake.

I have seen an erupting volcano.

I have never seen an earthquake.

I have seen pictures of the destruction, the desolation, and the despair. And I have seen nations rebuild from that destruction, reunite in their desolation, and revive themselves from their despair.

The pictures coming out of New Zealand this morning are heart wrenching.  I remember making my then 5-year-old who was home on suspension from school watch CNN all day when the Haiti earthquake hit.  That day he learned how an earthquake happens and all about plate tectonics. I didn't teach him what to do if he were to ever experience an earthquake, but rather them mechanics behind one.  Because at 5 years old you don't care a whole lot about what to do, but more about why it happens.  I took him to the bookstore and got him a book about earthquakes and used saltine crackers to demonstrate how the earth's plates move against each other.  After learning all this all he wanted to do was watch CNN that day and for weeks afterward. His biggest concern was where the people who had lost there houses were going to sleep at night.  His compassion for the people displaced and injured in that quake was amazing. I can only imagine what he's going to say when he sees pictures like this:

If you'd like to keep an up to the minute timeline you can visit the TVNZ site here

I am still looking into ways to help and will keep you updated on that.

Valentine's Day Treats - You Buy it Edition

I am continually amazed at the things that can be done with chocolate! The shapes it can be made or carved into, the ways it can be used to flavor cakes, all the different flavors it comes in even.  I have a friend who lives in Japan and he brought back some amazing Kit Kats over Christmas that really do attest to the versatility of chocolate flavoring (they were wasabi flavored and tasted just like wasabi, minus the heat).

So in honor of chocolate here are some wonderful Valentine's Day treats for those of you who don't bake!

Moonstruck Chocolate out of Portland makes this oh so sweet Love Bug truffle collection, 3 decadent raspberry truffles and 3 succulent strawberry truffles shaped like cute little bugs.  Take a look around the Moonstruck site and check out all the other cute truffles they make.  On top of being cute, they are amazingly good. I'm partial to their wild huckleberry truffle, it tastes like heaven.

Don't these berries look so yummy??? I just want to eat them all up! This is the 4 Valentines BrowniePops & 12 Valentines Berries from Shari's Berries.  I'm not big on buying predipped berries, I prefer to dip my own, but I love the colors and variety in this package and the fact that it comes with brownie pops!

The Sweet Exchange valentine's box from Richart Chocolates is infused with passion fruit, red berries, and caramel, how could you go wrong with that??? Plus they have such beautiful artistry adorning them!

How about this giant fortune cookie from Good Fortunes.  You can customize it with what kind of chocolate you want (milk, dark, or white) and write your own sweet message for the inside.

These sweet treats are personalized tree stump cookies from Whipped Bakeshop.  They can be customized with any initials and come in either chocolate or vanila!

Valentine's Day Treats - You Bake it Edition

I'm not a big fan of eating baked goods, however I love to bake (strange, I know).  I love decorating cupcakes, I love trying new recipes, I love all of it - except for the eating part.  The Man often tells me he's going to get a job where I don't have to work so I can stay home with my babies and bake him stuff all day.  It amuses me when he says this and then I remind him that I would be bored and spend money on fabric all the time.  It isn't that I would get bored of my children and spending time with them, but I am one of those people who has to always be doing something, and Squeaky takes naps.  Since I can't stay home and bake all day to give you my own awesome recipes, I hope these will substitute well enough to make you drool.

These heart shaped cinnamon rolls come from Pinch My Salt (love the name). Wouldn't they make an amazing breakfast for your loves on Valentine's Day?

Valentine's Confetti from the This Blessed Nest would be such a cute snack for a class party and could even be adapted for other holidays as well, just change the M&M colors!

Cake Balls!!! They are bite sized pieces of heaven - plus you can't feel guilty if you eat a few, they are just little balls.  The pic comes from Creative Momma's but she used this tutorial.

These are Scone sweet scones from Prudent Baby.  If you haven't checked these momma's out yet, they have an amazing blog! I love their ideas.

And who can resist a cake with a heart in the center? This heart cake comes from i am baker. This blog has some amazing tutorials on how to put almost anything you can imagine into the center of a cake (there's even a bat from halloween) .
